'Hopedene', the Mrs. Elizabeth Hope Gammell Slater residence designed by Peabody & Stearns between 1899-1902 in Newport, Rhode Island. Ogden Codman designed the interiors of the larger rooms. 'Hopedene' experienced some alterations over the years and was eventually willed to the Newport Preservation Society which sold the house back into private hands. a large bow front, quite handsome, was added to the garden front, and actually improved that facade from the original. I seem to remember that the interiors were by Ogden Codman? When the Pattersons owned the house, the dining room was inexplicably gutted and simplified with plain walls. Later owners used the bow room on the garden front, with yet more pilastered woodwork, as the dining room.

ReplyDeleteAside from the reduced formality of the gardens from when a large full time gardening staff was all but a requirement, one couldnt ask for a better maintained private property in 2011. I also always wanted to land a helicopter on my own private pad on the front lawn of my house. Beautiful photos.
