'Norwood Park'

A magnificent home and one where the garden facade is so far superior to what was a very pedestrian front facade with a tacked on porte-cochere. The university has utilized and maintained the property very well and even with a poorly designed blocky addition, the original relationship to the formal garden remains intact which was the best solution.
This is indeed a magnificent home especially the garden facade which also happens to be the street facade as well, so viewed from the street the place is indeed spectacular.
The house is located in West Long Branch, across the street from Elberon section of Long Branch.
I worked in the Monmouth University(then College) library in 1972-1974. There is a ghost, they say, who walks down the main staircase after midnight. The staircase is actually quite narrow, tucked in a corner. It is said to be the widow of Benjamin Guggenheim, one of the wealthiest men in America when he perished on the Titanic. His mistress survived the disaster, while his wife was home in the "cottage" in West Long Branch
