'Rest Hill'

'Rest Hill', the Robert Joseph Collier estate designed by John Russell Pope c. 1911 in Wickatunk, New Jersey. Following the death of his father Peter F. Collier, R.J. took over the family business of P.F. Collier & Son, publishers. Click HERE to see the P.F. Collier estate in Southampton. R.J. Collier died in 1918 and his wife gave the house to the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in 1927. Today it operates as an administrative center for Collier Services. George Washington's baleful influence on American architecture never ends, does it?

I seem to remember reading that this house had accommodation for 50. That's a lot of breakfast trays.

Ancient, Mt. Vernon remains the gift that keeps on giving

It's alarming to see how fast a fire can spread in less than eight minutes, even with the fire department in attendance.

I can't believe I would criticize Pope but I've spent the last few days trying to sort out the roofline on the center section of this house - sort of a lopsided gambrel with wings. It strikes me as odd and clunky. But I love the classic styling of the staircase and entry. It is an interesting structure. The sum is more grand than its parts. I'm glad it survives and is still in use.
