Alice Austen's 1896 NYC 6

And there the New York policeman stands, magically and improbably transported to an Italian plaza by the Herald Building in the background---and back to New York with the El in the background.'
Alice Austen maybelacked the poetry of Lartique---or perhaps bustling, growing Gilded Age Manhattan lacked the poetry of old Paris---but she had the same sure instinct for the scene that was about to disappear.
