There is something oddly fitting about the passing of Mayor Koch and the 100th birthday of Grand Central.

He will be missed by many New Yorkers.

Whenever he saw Otto with me he would ask if Otto had been herding any sheep lately. I loved walking out the door at 6:30am and seeing him sitting on the bench waiting for his car to take him to work but having nodded off asleep (as recently as a couple of months ago). If it weren't for his presence here I would not have been able to get back up to my apartment as easily as I did following the return of electricity to lower Manhattan after Hurricane Sandy. He was shocked to hear I carried Otto down 17 flights of stairs in the dark...but he seemed rather impressed. The last chance I had to speak to him was on my birthday three weeks ago. I mentioned that I had just seen the preview for his film and he told me that I would definitely enjoy it. He also brought up carrying Otto down the stairs...which left me with a smile. And with that I bid him goodnight.

Thanks for the memories of His Honor, Zach. What an amazing life he lived.
My birthday was 3 weeks ago too, the 11th!

I keep forgetting what a small town Manhattan can be---and your delightful memories of Mayor Koch bring that point home. He was remarkable.

In other news, these are such amazing pictures of Grand Central, but it does make me a bit triste that one station had to die that the other might live...
