The last link provided gives insight into the McAlpin developers mindset. Knowing preservationists were interested in the unique Marine Grill interiors, the room was declared off limits and "no comment" was provided as to it's fate until an individual spotted dumpsters loaded with magnificent polychrome terracotta pieces from the room being tossed out like so much trash.
Fortunately some of the most stunning pieces with images of maritime harbor views and notable ships were salvaged from the dumpsters and a few are installed in NY's Fulton Street subway stop. Such tactics speak volumes about developers.
So much of New York's legendary past has been lost to demolition/conversion to condos it might well become a city without a soul, lacking the very essence that makes up a great metropolis and existing purely to house an every expanding population.
